How to disable Smart HDR

Smart HDR is available on the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. The feature uses Machine Learning, which used to be called Artificial Intelligence before people got scared of that phrase, and other ‘computational photography techniques’ to get a great looking picture.  (Computational Photography Techniques is a fancy way of saying Filters)

It is really good if the sun is behind the subject the photo. Normally, this feature is so good that you will want to have it enabled all the time. But if you do want to disable it then follow these easy instructions.

How to disable Smart HDR on iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Camera.
  2. Toggle Smart HDR off.

There is no Smart HDR on older iPhones. They have standard HDR. It is not possible to enable standard HDR on the phones that have Smart HDR.

If you want to disable standard HDR on an older iPhone you can do so almost exactly the same as with Smart HDR:

  1. Settings > Camera.
  2. Toggle Auto HDR off.
The 2 settings screens that are needed to disable Smart HDR on the iPhone XS, XR and XS Max
Go to Settings > Camera. From there you can toggle Smart HDR.
